Interview With Tom From 'Crayons and Chaos'

Tell me a bit about yourself

My name is Tom. My marriage broke up twelve months ago and I have two young sons, Sean and Reece. I was left heartbroken and completely shell shocked. I never thought I would meet someone and fall in love again, but the universe had other plans for me.

How did you meet Natalie?

We met through a mutual friend, and the connection was electric. I felt as if I had known her for years. Luckily for me she felt the same way. It all happened so fast. When I realised I was in love with her, I was afraid to tell her in case I scared her off, but here we are.

Why were you afraid you would scare her off?

Natalie was forty-two when we met and had no children of her own. I was afraid the two miniature terrorists that came as part of the package would send her running for her life.

How long did you wait to introduce her to your kids?

I initially intended to wait 12 months, but when you know, you know, right? I knew she was a keeper.

Do the kids have a good relationship with her?

Although it was a shock to her system suddenly having two children high-jack much of her spare time, I feel the fact that the kids were so young helped with building trust. They accepted her very quickly as part of the family.

How is your sex life having the kids around?

We share the kids fifty-fifty with their mum. Let’s just say we try to make the most of the time they are not with us, but if we do try to sneak in some fun, it reminds us we really need to get a lock on our bedroom door.

What do you feel has been most challenging for her adjusting to becoming an instant step-parent?

Probably feeling like she is constantly being judged by other mothers. I think she does an amazing job. Just because you are a biological parent doesn’t mean you know everything. Kids don’t come with an instruction manual, right? Besides, you don’t need to have given birth to know how to raise a child.

Have there been any funny moments?

There was one incident involving Sean being tethered to the clothesline by his younger brother using a pair of handcuffs he found in our bedroom. The keys got lost and the fire brigade had to be called. She took it all in her stride, so I know she can handle anything.

Well thanks you for chatting with us Tom. I wish you guys all the best. Natalie sounds like a trooper and you are lucky to have her in your life.
