Book Review - 'The Dating Game' by Sandy Barker

If you are a fan of reality TV, especially The Bachelor, then this book is for you. It is a laugh out loud good time.

Our protagonist is Abby Jones. She aspires to be a serious journalist. For a long time, Abby has been writing snarky recaps for The Stag (The books version of The Bachelor) under the pseudonym of Anastasia Blabbergasted.

When one of her recaps goes viral, a producer wants her to write recaps for the up and coming season, but that is not all. They want her to go into the mansion undercover as a contestant to get the inside gossip.

She begrudgingly agrees hoping it will further her career opportunities. Besides, what British girl could say no to an overseas trip to sunny Sydney where this season is being filmed, on the shores of beautiful Sydney Harbour?

Abby quickly infiltrates the ranks of the Does (other female contestants) to get the inside dirt on what really goes on when behind the scenes.

Abbey gets to write her recaps from a hidden room within the mansion and is also allowed limited contact with the outside world. While hidden away in her secret room she gets to work. Her acid tonged alter ego letting fly.

Abby intends to write an in-depth exposé on the exploitative nature of shows like The Stag, in order to launch her career as a serious investigative journalist.

But, once inside the mansion, she faces many unexpected challenges, throwing a spanner in the works. She finds genuine friendships with some of the other Does, falls for the handsome Aussie producer, Jack, and has a huge amount of distain for The Stag.

Can she pull off the undercover sting of the century?

This is the first book of Sandy’s I have read and I cannot wait to read more of her work. Her writing is fun and light-hearted, a great escape. This book has it all. Friendships, romance, humour, and drama. I give it 5 stars *****
